2008 Davis Cup Final Preview

The2008 Davis Cup final begins today as Argentina attempts to win the tournament for the first time in three attempts. The Argentineans' opponents in the final will be two-times Davis Cup winners Spain, who will be playing in the tournament without world number one Rafael Nadal.

Argentina is the favourite to win the Davis Cup, with the Argentinean team playing in front of a partisan home crowd at the Islas Malvinas Stadium in Mar del Plata. William Hill has priced Argentina as the 1/4 favourite to win the event, while Spain has been priced 10/3 to upset the Argentineans at home.

The surface chosen by the Argentineans for the Davis Cup final is expected to have a significant impact on the outcome of the tournament. Argentina elected to play the event on hard courts, negating Spanish superiority on clay.

The Argentineans will also feature higher ranked players than their Spanish opponents, with the opening two fixtures reflecting this superiority, as David Nalbandian takes on David Ferrer and Juan Martin del Potro faces Feliciano Lopez.

The only advantage Spain takes into the final is history, with the knowledge that Argentina has never defended a Spanish team in the Davis Cup. The Spaniards also believe that massive public expectation in Argentina may ultimately count against their hosts.
