Spain wins 3rd Davis Cup title
Spain became only the 7th country to win three or more Davis Cup titles after it scored an upset victory over hosts Argentina in Mar del Plata on Sunday.
The Spanish, who entered the tournament as underdogs in the absence of Rafael Nadal, didn't require a 5th match to settle the result of the final after Fernando Verdasco defeated Jose Acasuso in a 5 set thriller on Sunday morning.
"It's like a dream come true - it's the most beautiful day of my life," an ecstatic Verdasco told Sky Sports after defeating Acasuso 6-3, 6-7 (3/7), 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 in front of an ecstatic home crowd. "It's a nice sensation. It's a great day for all the people in Spain."
Verdasco and Acasuso were drawn to play the 4th game of the 2008 Davis Cup final after Juan Martin del Potro and David Ferrer withdrew from the fixture. The early stages of the match saw Acasuso dominate, before Verdasco's superior fitness and experience came through as he won the last two sets.
The loss was heartbreaking for Acasuso, who also competed in the final match of the 2006 Davis Cup final, losing to Nikolay Davydenko in 5 sets to give Russia the win.
